However, one of your margins will need to be bigger than the others, and that is the inside margin, otherwise known as the gutter. The reason for this is that books do not lay flat when they are opened: the pages have to bend out from the spine.

This creates a "gutter" where the two pages join. Click the Page Layout tab on the menu bar, then click and open Margins. On the drop-down menu, click Custom Margins (at the bottom of the menu).

It is a buffer, a leeway, a gap; the place we go to heal, to relate, to reflect, to recharge our batteries, to focus on the things that matter most.

The debate on modernity and postmodernity has awakened interest in the importance of the spatial for cultural formations.

But what of those spaces that exist as much in the imagination as in physical reality. This book attempts to develop an alternative geography and sociology of space by examining `places on the margin'.

The margins are different because the margin closest to the binding of the book (the inner margins) must to be larger than the outer so that the text doesn’t get cut off from being too close to the binding. These inner margins are called gutter margins, based on the gutter-like shape they create in.

If there's not enough margin, the reader will tend to open the book wider taking the chance of breaking the book's back, if you will. A page book will not need an inner margin as wide as a page book. Likewise, a page book shouldn't really need inner margins larger than a page book.
